UIST 2022 is committed to providing an inclusive environment and we will do our best to accommodate requests for special assistance. This page describes the accessibility features of UIST 2022, to help you make an informed decision about whether the conference will be accessible to you. Please contact us if your question is not answered here, or if the conference arrangements as described are not enough to allow you to attend. We will work with you to the best of our ability, to make the conference accessible.

How do I communicate accessibility needs to UIST 2022 organizers?

The Accessibility Chairs for UIST 2022 is Amanda Swearngin, Venkatesh Potluri, Yi-Hao Peng, whose goal is to ensure the conference is accessible to everyone. When you register for the conference, there will be a registration question labeled "Do you have a disability or special need which requires our awareness?". In your response, please indicate any accessibility needs such as wheelchair access, sign language interpretation, or a guide. The Accessibility Chairs will follow up with you to clarify your needs. You can contact them directly at any time by emailing accessibility2022@uist.org.

Will sign language interpretation or captioning be available?

The conference will provide a team of sign language interpreters or captioners if requested by any attendees during the early registration period. Please make your request as early as possible. Our Accessibility Chairs will follow up with you to discuss your needs in more detail. After September 17th, 2022 (the deadline for early registration), a best effort will be made to accommodate requests, but we cannot guarantee that interpreters or captioners will be available.

What are the taxi and public transport options for getting to the conference venue?

There are a few options for getting to the conference venue from the nearest airport to bend in Redmond, OR. Within Bend, Cascades East Transit is the local bus system. See here for a map of the routes within Bend. All CET buses are wheelchair & ADA accessible and have lifts. For additional accessibility information on the CET bus route, see here.

Redmond airport is the closest commercial airport to Bend, however, Portland and Eugene are also potential options. The Bend, OR transportation page has compiled several options.

From the airport in Redmond, Modus Transportation provides an accessible shuttle from the airport to locations in the Bend area. There is also a route from the Redmond airport entirely reachable by bus. Cobreeze and Shuttle Oregon also provide shuttle / bus service between Portland and Central oregon. If taking a train is an option for you, you may also Amtrak (Hawthorne Station) - can take the local bus (#4) to Riverhouse at the Deschutes

Can a student volunteer assist me during the conference?

Student volunteers will be available to assist attendees with disabilities with navigation, meal service, or other accessibility needs. If you will need volunteer assistance at the conference, please indicate this on your conference registration form.

Attendees who require personal care assistance should bring their own assistant. Care Givers ($50) — This registration category is for people providing care to the conference attendees with impairments or to the children of conference attendees. It grants the person access to all events (including the Demo Reception) except the Banquet. No drink tickets will be included with the caregiver registration. If you would like your caregiver to attend the Banquet, you will be able to purchase an additional Banquet ticket when you register your caregiver.

What is the conference space like?

The main floor where talks will be held has several conference rooms laid out in a grid with a hallway going around the grid with doors to enter each conference room. The main entrance is on the west side of the building. To the right after entering is a long hallway where along the left side are entrances to various meeting rooms. As you continue around the building in a large rectangle, additional meetings rooms can be found on the left. The Cascade board room (quiet space) is located on the north side of the building if you continue down the hallway going around the outer side of the building. The (Mens, Womens) restrooms are located on the North and South sides of the building, along with two standalone restrooms, which are all ADA accessible. The elevator is also located on the North side across from the stairs. The exhibit hall is located on the lower level of the building. Sessions will likely be relatively close together and not require much walking as the session rooms will all be located on the same upper level in a grid.

We are still working on an evacuation plan for attendees with mobility limitations.

Will the conference be accessible by wheelchair or power scooter?

Yes, the conference will be accessible to wheelchair users. Yes, the conference will be accessible to wheelchair users. All areas of the venue relevant to the conference are accessible by wheelchair, including the main entrance. The bathrooms are on the same floor as the conference rooms, and are ADA acceesible. There's an elevator down to the exhibit hall of the conference. The conference center at this time does not have a ramp on to the stage. If you are a presenter who uses a wheelchair, please contact us as soon as possible so that we can make arrangements. What are the restroom facilities like?

Attendees will have access to all of the bathrooms in the convention area. There are 3 standalone gender neutral restrooms, one upstairs, and two downstairs. There are also 2 sets of mens / womens restrooms both with ADA accessible stalls.

Can I bring my guide dog?

Yes! Guide dogs and other service animals are welcome at UIST 2022. There will be a relief area with water available. Yes, there are many grassy areas outside the conference venue to the south around the building for guide dogs, including the Cascade garden area and a pet area by the Redfox building. Sawyer Park nearby to Riverhouse at the Deschutes is dog friendly park, and Pine Nursery dog park in Bend is also leash free. Please indicate on your registration form if you anticipate bringing a service animal to the conference.

Can I attend the conference by robot?

We are sorry, but UIST 2022 will not be able to accommodate remote attendance by robot.

How much walking or standing will be needed?

The conference will be entirely held, except for the banquet, in the Deschutes convention center. The elevator is very close to the main north entrance, just continue walking straight from the entrance and find the elevator and stairs to the left. The restrooms (ADA accessible) are located around the corner from the stairs. The conference rooms are east of the main entrance and are all relatively close together, thus should require minimal amounts of walking between sessions. There is seating available in the Cascade board room (quiet room), the patio areas outside, and in the main lobby. There is unfortunately not a lot of seating available in the hallways near the meeting rooms.

Will there be an induction loop in the meeting rooms?

The rooms do not have an induction loop available.

Will speakers and audience members asking questions be using a microphone?

Yes, microphones will be used for all speakers. Attendees with questions will be requested to use a microphone so that their question is more easily heard.

What food service will be provided?

The conference will provide food, when available through a conference event, will be served buffet style. All food items in the menu will be labeled as gluten free, vegan, and with other potential allergens as appropriate. Please check with the local staff if you are unsure if a particular food may contain ingredients that you may be allergic to. We are unable to provide any information on food at social events organized by conference attendees. Please indicate on your registration form if you have any specific dietary needs. Can the conference accommodate special dietary needs?

Yes. Attendees who indicate special dietary requirements on their registration form will be provided with special meals when the conference catering does not accommodate them. If you have a severe allergy please indicate this on your registration form. For more detailed information please contact Cindy Grimm at local2022@uist.org.

Will the conference be a smoke-free environment?

The entire conference venue is a no-smoking area. We are still gathering information on where there are smoking areas outside the venue.

Will there be loud music, strobe lighting, spotlights, or other strong sensory experiences?

We are working on collecting this information for the demo sessions. We will update the attendees with this information before the demo session. Attendees may scan a QR code to visit a website with collected sensory information for selected demos.

Will there be a designated quiet space at the conference?

Yes, the conference room Cascade across from the main ballrooms is allocated as a quiet space. Please contact Amanda, Yi-Hao, or Venkatesh at accessibility2022@uist.org or ask any student volunteer if you need help locating the room.

What if I have a medical emergency or health problem during the conference?

In case of emergency call 911 for an ambulance. In case of emergency call 911 for an ambulance. St. Charles hospital in Bend is 2.8 miles from the conference. If you require non-urgent medical care, please contact Amanda Swearngin, Venkatesh Potluri, Yi-Hao Peng at accessibility2022@uist.org or ask any student volunteer. They will provide you with information about local doctors, specialists, chiropractors, etc. For non-resident attendees, buying travel insurance that covers medical expenses is strongly recommended as fees for emergency treatment can be very high.
